The AZPAS Spring Days of Percussion are designed to feature elementary, junior high, high school and college soloists as well as ensembles from around the state. Each performance receives comments and festival ratings from national and regional judges, including the guest clinicians, university instructors, and other professional Arizona percussionists. The solo festival format is provided in the areas of Snare Drum, Keyboard Percussion, Steel Pan, Timpani, Multiple Percussion, Drum Set, and World Percussion. Ensembles may include Percussion Ensembles, Keyboard Ensembles, and World Percussion Ensembles ranging from duets and trios to large ensembles and including elementary school through college or adult performers. Following the solo & ensemble festival, the guest clinicians present free clinics in their area of expertise. Showcase concerts vary and can take place on Friday and Saturday night. The concerts can include mass ensembles of Arizona percussionists (Mass Steel Band, Mass Marimba Band), performances by guest clinicians, and performances by outstanding solo and ensemble participants.
The AZPAS Fall Drumline Festival serves as an evaluation show for junior high and high school drumlines. This festival is an opportunity for the marching band percussion section to be evaluated independently from the band and to receive feedback from several judges who are experts in marching percussion. Each performing ensemble receives a rating based on the same criteria and scale as they will at ABODA events along with recorded and written comments by each of three festival judges. In addition, every drumline also receives a 15-20 minute critique session immediately following their performances by an experienced Arizona percussion instructor. Soloists and small ensembles may also perform for critique and rating on any instrument within the marching percussion genre (snare, tenors, bass drum, cymbals, front ensemble). Between the morning and afternoon sessions of this festival, our nationally recognized guest clinicians will present free clinics centered on rehearsal and performance considerations for the marching percussion ensemble.
