Wednesday, August 13 and Thursday, August 14 over 80 high school and middle school students participated in the Meadows School Las Vegas’ annual Drum Camp. Nevada PAS members Kirk Rustman, Brett Barnes, Rachel Julian and Richele Panther performed and gave clinics on drumset, vibraphone, steel pans and concert percussion. From Cirque du Soleil : Kurt Rasmussen, Pepe Jimenez and Larry Aberman worked with the students in a variety of World Percussion settings. Local Las Vegas drummers Tom Mears, Conrad Csogi and John Freixas rounded out the event by giving drumset clinics and student demonstrations. Drumset historian, author and founder of the Royal Crown Revue, Daniel Glass, closed the event with a historical/playing lecture that traced the roots of the drumset and demonstrated a mixed bag of early Rhythm and Blues styles. The drum camp was sponsored by DW Drums, Bosphorus Cymbals, Vater Drumsticks, Evans Drumheads, Promark, Aquarian Drumheads, Yamaha Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Remo and Zildjian Cymbals.
