    The Percussive Arts Society (PAS) is the world's largest percussion organization and is considered the central source for information and networking for percussionists and drummers of all ages. Established in 1961 as a non-profit, music service organization, our mission is to promote percussion education, research, performance and appreciation throughout the world.

    Today, PAS boasts over 7,500 members with 50 chapters located across the United States, and an additional 28 chapters outside the United States. PAS publishes two bi-monthly publications, Percussive Notes and Percussion News, and a website that contains publication archives, research databases, a conference center, museum tour and other features.

    PAS is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and includes Rhythm! Discovery Center, the world's foremost percussion museum and one of the top locations for hands-on music making in the nation according to USA TODAY. Drawing upon cultures from around the world, the Center offers a unique, engaging experience to explore the universality of rhythm and percussion and its role in shaping communication, music, art, performance and society. Walking through the visually captivating exhibit rooms and performance venue, guests are invited to fulfill their dreams of being a percussionist.

    For over 50 years the Percussive Arts Society has been serving all levels of percussion performers as well as the percussion industry. Each year PAS hosts the largest percussion convention in the world, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC), featuring the top names in drumming and percussion. Now in its 36th year, PASIC features more than 115 concerts, clinics, master classes, labs, workshops, panels and presentations. The top percussion artists from all over the world present and perform in areas that include, drumset, marching, keyboard, symphonic, timpani, world, recreational, education, music technology, new music, and health and wellness. Attendance is over 6,000 annually. PASIC also features the International Drum and Percussion Expo, which includes over 115 percussion related manufacturers, publishers and organizations exhibiting and demonstrating the latest instruments, sticks and mallets, accessories, music, and related products and services.

    In addition, more than 60 domestic and international PAS Chapters host Days of Percussion and other clinics in their regions throughout the year.


    The PAS Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer and reports to the PAS Executive Officers and Board of Directors.

    Reporting to the PAS Executive Officers and Board of Directors, the PAS Executive Director will have the responsibility for implementing and enhancing the organization's strategic goals, leading fundraising initiatives, developing and administrating program activities, leadership of the day-to-day administrative functions, and ensuring that staff are in place to meet operational needs. The individual selected will be bold and creative in enhancing the Society's position as a vibrant member of the arts community in Indianapolis and around the world.


    Much of the PAS Executive Director's energy will be spent enhancing and creating connections with a variety of constituents. These may include leaders of the community, donors, artists, leaders of other artistic/cultural organizations as well as those with a vested interest in the organization.



    1. The PAS Executive Director will participate in strategic planning and the evolution of existing and new programs. He/she will be creative and willing to work closely with the elected PAS Executive Officers and Board of Directors and foster new Board candidates to enhance the mission of the Society, its programs and development efforts.
    2. The PAS Executive Director is expected to lead and strengthen fundraising endeavors utilizing local, regional and national resources. Development is a primary responsibility of the PAS Executive Director.
    3. The PAS Executive Director will have excellent communication skills, and will develop and maintain regular communication with the PAS Executive Officers and Board of Directors. The PAS Executive Director will also possess a passion and ability for developing and maintaining long-term relationships that will enhance the financial, artistic and educational goals of the Society.
    4. The PAS Executive Director will be charged with enhancing the Society's brand through groundbreaking programs that generate regional, national and international recognition.
    5. The PAS Executive Director should possess a solid track record of leading and seeing projects through to successful completion.
    6. The PAS Executive Director will work directly with the PAS Executive Officers and be responsible for overseeing the assets and financial affairs of the Society, ensuring expenditures are in line with the Society's resources and achieving an appropriate balance between revenue generation and fundraising. The PAS Executive Director also serves as the President of Percussion Merchandise, Inc., a for-profit subsidiary of PAS that operates merchandise sales.
    7. The PAS Executive Director is expected to administer and oversee all facets associated with the Society's museum Rhythm! Discovery Center including financial aspects, fundraising, programming, and exhibit development and design.
    8. The PAS Executive Director is expected to lead and delegate to staff responsibility for the successful management of daily affairs of the Society.

    The PAS Executive Director position requires:

    • Knowledge of the percussive arts.
    • Demonstrated success in leadership and management positions.
    • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
    • Strategic thinking with an innovative style, and a willingness to explore new ideas.
    • An entrepreneurial spirit; specifically, a willingness to generate new and enhanced earned and unearned revenue sources for the Society as well as Rhythm! Discovery Center.
    • Demonstrated experience in successfully managing and developing operating budgets.
    • The ability to effectively implement established business practices within a nonprofit environment.
    • A personable and inclusive management style that optimizes the staff and resources through leadership and delegation.
    • A willingness to live in and/or around Indianapolis, Indiana and to participate actively in the Society's lively schedule of activities and events weekdays, evenings and weekends.
    • A bachelor's degree.

    {An advanced degree (MBA, MFA, etc.) is desirable but NOT required; experience may be factored in lieu of an advanced degree}



    Compensation and benefits package is highly competitive.
