7th Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps

7th Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps

June, 2015

7th Regiment, from New London, CT, is Connecticut’s only DCI Drum & Bugle Corps.  Through music and marching arts education, competition and travel, the 7th Regiment is dedicated to developing leadership, character, and life skills in its’ members to enable them to reach their full potential.  Founded in 2002, 7th Regiment is a member of DCI (Drum Corps International) and they compete in open class.

Drum corps is an intensive educational and performance opportunity for members unlike any other.  Members have the opportunity to learn from world-class staff and push their personal limits to achieve excellence in the marching arts.  After auditions in the fall, there are rehearsal camp weekends once a month through the winter and spring until the corps goes on tour in the summer to compete against other corps.  Membership in 7th regiment is open to anyone under the age of 22.  Members this year are from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and Canada, although each year members audition from all over the country.

Their 2015 show is entitled, “Labyrinth.”  It explores the labyrinth built by Daedalus in Greek mythology.  Audiences will encounter exciting surprises around every turn as the program will have twists and turns of a magnificent, confounding, and sometimes dangerous maze.  This year, 7th Regiment has a great percussion staff led by Jeff Bickford as percussion caption head.  The rest of the percussion staff includes Mike Nevin, Scott Daley, Paul Downing, Alex King, Brendan Mason, Colin Mason, Tim Miller, and Gene Bennett III.  Their sponsors are Promark sticks and mallets, Pearl/Adams equipment, Remo drumheads, and Zildjian cymbals.

In addition to excellent instruction, members also get the opportunity to travel with the corps on tour.  “Practicing 10 hours a day with an ensemble is unlike any other experience I’ve had,” said Joe Smith, from Cranston, RI.  “I’ve been a member for three years and I’ve always loved it here at 7th.  Even on your first day it feels like your family.  Everyone is very welcoming, regardless of your background.  Truly everyone has a place at 7th.”  Joe is a member of the front ensemble and will complete his junior corps career with 7th this summer.

7th still has two open spots for Vibraphone and Percussion Rack so if you’re a high school or college age student interested in spending a summer getting better at percussion, go to their website to learn more!
