For Snare Drum Applicants: All pieces should be prepared and played on a concert style snare drum. There will be examples of different types of rolls (closed, open, etc.) in some of the repertoire. Participants should follow the composers’ instructions, historical contexts, and their teachers’ instructions as to how to interpret the rolls for each piece. (For instance, each division has required Rudimental and Concert etudes for the first round of the competition; each should be interpreted according to appropriate stylistic elements.)

Participants may bring their own snare drum and stand if desired. A snare drum and stand will be provided in each of the audition rooms for those students who cannot provide their own snare drums and stands.

For Marimba Applicants: The University of Maryland will supply a 5-octave marimba from the Yamaha and Adams companies. A 4.3 Musser and Adams marimba will also be available upon request.

For All Applicants: Warm-up time will be provided in the band room at the University of Maryland – College Park School of Music beginning at 9:30 am. Please check-in at the check-in desk for directions and details beginning at 9:30 am. Signage will point contestants to the location of the check-in desk.

The winner of each division must be available to perform during the final concert of the day at the end of the “Day of Percussion” (between 5 pm and 6:30 pm) and to receive their prizes. The winners must also be willing to have their pictures taken with their prizes for distribution with the affiliated sponsor companies’ press materials.
